Four Medicinal Plants Used To Fight Infection

For thousands of years, people around the world have turned to plants for support during times of illness, health challenges, and recovery. Before modern pharmaceuticals, communities relied on the intelligence of the natural world, learning through observation, experience, and relationship with the plants around them. Researchers continue to discover bioactive compounds within plants that show antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-supportive properties.

In this article, we’ll explore four powerful plants that have been used to support the body’s natural defences; Chilcuague, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, and Indian Borage (Mexican Mint). Each of them offering their own unique gifts, and together, they form a powerful botanical alliance.

Chilcuague (Heliopsis longipes)

Known as the “toothache plant,” Chilcuague has been used for generations by Indigenous communities in Mexico, to relieve oral discomfort, support immune health, and resilience during times of sickness.

When Chilcuague is sprayed in to the mouth, it creates a distinctive tingling and numbing sensation. This effect comes primarily from a naturally occurring compound called affinin (also known as spilanthol), an alkamide that has attracted a lot of scientific interest.

Research suggests that affinin has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and immunomodulatory or in other words, immune system regulation properties. Laboratory studies have demonstrated activity against several pathogenic microorganisms while also influencing inflammatory pathways within the body.

One review published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology described Heliopsis longipes as a plant with ‘significant therapeutic potential’ due to its rich concentration of bioactive alkamides. Researchers have noted that these compounds may help explain the plant’s longstanding traditional use for oral infections, sore throats, and inflammatory conditions.

Beyond its physical applications, Chilcuague offers something else that many modern herbalists value, rapid bioavailability, or in other words, how quickly and completely a medicine or nutrient gets into your bloodstream, and travels to the part of your body that need it. The tingling sensation created by affinin, stimulates salivation and circulation within the mouth, potentially enhancing absorption of plant properties.

While more human clinical research is needed, Chilcuague represents an amazing bridge between traditional plant wisdom and plant science.

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)

Much of eucalyptus’ activity comes from compounds found within its essential oils, particularly 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), along with alpha-pinene and terpinen-4-ol.

Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus)

The leaves have been prepared as teas, syrups, and fresh infusions to support respiratory wellness, digestion, and immune health.

Indian Borage contains an impressive variation of plant compounds, including polyphenols, flavonoids, thymol, and carvacrol, molecules widely studied for their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.
